Hearts With Hands Responds to Wrightsville, GA Tornado Scene
Asheville, NC According to Mr. Burt Dixon, the Incident Commander for the Wrightsville Georgia Emergency Management Office at approximately 6:30 A.M. Sunday, May 11, Wrightsville and the surrounding area were hit by at least two tornadoes with winds in excess of 120 mph. One of these tornadoes was reported to be on the ground for over 71 miles and held a path of destruction over one-half a mile wide. First reports came in that the entire city of Kite, Georgia was completely destroyed and the majority of its one-thousand residents. This later proved to be a mistake. The city of Kite had significant damage and along with the other counties and Governor Sonny Perdue requested a disaster declaration which was granted releasing FEMA aid to the area. Burt Dixon reported the biggest problem they were facing was the fact the electricity was off due to the tremendous amount of power lines that went down, which in turn meant no water for the city or the county residents. Electrical crews were working diligently to remove the downed trees, some of them over 30 in diameter, and were reconstructing the power lines as the Hearts With Hands Advance Team surveyed the area. The Georgia Baptist Association had a feeding station set up at their office complex located at 257 Trojan Way, Wrightsville, GA 31096. Hearts With Hands has already delivered a load of disaster relief supplies consisting primarily of water, juices, baby supplies, and paper products. The weight of the load was close to 25,000 pounds and is valued at approximately $45,000. Hearts With Hands will be transporting food for the Georgia Baptist Mens Association from nearby Macon, GA as necessary. According to Bruce Poss, Director of the Georgia Baptist Disaster Relief, all of the small towns affected have to collectively pool their resources to help in all the areas devastated. Hearts With Hands will be part of this collaborative effort and is requesting disaster relief supplies, food, and financial donations to cover packing and transportation costs. At this point, volunteers to work in the area are not needed; however, as the electricity is restored there may be a need for volunteers to help with clean-up efforts.
Below are supplies that will aid in the relief effort.
