Hearts with Hands Responds to Tornado Outbreak of March 2 - On Friday, March 2, 2012 over 94 tornado sightings were reported throughout the US. The Midwest and South were hardest hit in the states of Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio and Alabama leaving at least 38 dead and hundreds homeless and without power. Alabama Emergency Management relayed they had suffered one fatality and 11 injuries. Pastor Don Jennings, Director, Hearts With Hands—Alabama advised they were on standby for the city of Moody and would provide information to Asheville –based Hearts With Hands as soon as search and recovery efforts were concluded.
Locally, the Cherokee County communities of Hiwassee Dam, Peachtree, Martins, Tomotla, Grape Creek and the town of Murphy suffered property damage, however no fatalities have been reported. American Red Cross Disaster Operations Director, Tony Reed advised Hearts With Hands they had set up a small shelter at the Peachtree Fire Department and requested water and tarps from Hearts With Hands. A load of supplies is being sent to Cherokee County and other items will be shipped by Hearts With Hands as soon as an assessment has been made.
